Smudge stick ceremonies are quite significant at Aphelion (when the earth is furthest from the sun), Perihelion (when the earth is closest to the sun), Equinoxes and Solstices.  Sage is used in ceremony to cleanse and in prayer.

Great to repel mosquitoes and other insects.

Resin & Wood Incense

Frankincense Resin Frankincense Resin  - $7
Granules or Powder
30g and 100g

The aroma of frankincense is said to represent life.  It has a warm, sweet, rich fragrance that has been associated with spirituality since earliest antiquity. It has the ability to slow and deepen the breath which produces a sense of calm.

About Frankincense -  meaning "frank" or "true", is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia found in South Arabia and East Africa.  These trees are considered unusual for their ability to grow in environments so unforgiving that the trees sometimes grow directly out of solid stone. The deep roots prevent the trees from being torn away during violent storms.
At its peak its value rivaled that of gold, the rarest silks and the most precious of gems.  Frankincense was lavishly used in religious rites eg in the Bible's Old Testament, it was part of the temple rites; according to Matthew 2:11, gold, frankincense and myrrh were among the gifts to Jesus by the Biblical Magi "from out of the east".

The Egyptians ground the charred resin into a powder called kohl which was used to make the distinctive black eyeliner seen on so many figures in Egyptian art.

Judaic, Christian and Islamic faiths have used frankincense mixed with oils to anoint newborn infants and individuals considered to be moving into a new phase in their spiritual lives.

Myrrh Resin Myrrh Resin  - $7
Granules or Powder
30g and 100g

The scent of myrrh is sharp, pleasant, somewhat bitter tinged with a slight vanillic sweetness.  Myrrh has been used since antiquity to inspire prayer and meditation, and to fortify and revitalize the spirit.

Myrrh is a red-brown resinous material, the dried sap of the tree Commiphora myrrha.  A small scrubby tree, native to Somalia and eastern parts of Ethiopia.

Myrrh was burned at ancient Roman funerals to mask the smell emanating from charring corpses and as a penitential incense.  It was also used as an embalming ointment. It is alluded to in the Christmas carol We Three Kings (see link to Lyrics below).
Myrrh was one of the gifts of the Magi to the infant Jesus according to Matthew 2:11.  Myrrh was also used to anoint Jesus' body after the crucifixion.

When burned, it produces a smoke that is heavy, bitter and somewhat phenolic in scent, which may be tinged with a slight vanillic sweetness. Unlike most other resins, myrrh expands and "blooms" when burned instead of melting or liquefying.

Myrrh is used to:  improve circulation ("blood-moving"), heart rate/power, digestion, boost the immune system, and for rheumatic and arthritic complaints. Various traditions have used it to treat coughs, gum disease, wounds, bruises, aches, sprains, candida and skin disease.  In Chinese medicine, myrrh is classified as bitter, spicy, neutral in temperature and affecting the heart, liver, and spleen meridians.  It is one of the most effective of all disinfectants and has been used as an additive to wine and in various perfumes, toothpastes, lotions, and other modern toiletries.

Frankincense and Myrrh Resin Frankincense and Myrrh Resin  - $7
Granules - 25g and 100g

Myrrh was highly prized in ancient times and was worth more than its weight in gold.  In Ancient Rome myrrh was priced at five times as much as frankincense, though the latter was far more popular.

 Dragon's Blood Resin Dragon's Blood Resin  - $7

Granules or Powder
10g and 100g

Dragon's Blood was used to cleanse a space of negative entities or influences.

Dragon's blood is a bright red resin that is obtained from four distinct plant genera: Croton, Dracaena (Canary Islands, Morocco), Daemonorops (Indonesian islands) and Pterocarpus.

A great degree of confusion existed for the ancient Romans as to the source/identity of dragon's blood.  Dracaena resin, "true" dragon's blood and a poisonous mineral cinnabar (mercury sulphide) were often confused because anything that was bright red was called "dragon's blood".

Dragon's blood was used by early Greeks, Romans and Arabs for medicinal properties eg wash or cure-all for general wound healing, to stop bleeding, diarrhea, fevers, dysentery, ulcers (mouth, throat, intestines, stomach), also as an antiviral for respiratory and stomach viruses and for skin disorders as eczema.  It is used internally for chest pains, post-partum bleeding, internal traumas and menstrual irregularities.

Dragon's blood was used for ceremonies in India. It was used in China as red varnish for wooden furniture and to colour writing paper for banners and posters, used for weddings and Chinese New Year.

In African-American folk magic or vodun.  Used in mojo hands for money-drawing or love-drawing, to cleanse a space of negative entities or influences. It was added to red ink to make "Dragon's Blood Ink", used to inscribe magical seals and talismans to increase the potency of spells for protection, love, banishment and sexuality.

Dragon's blood was used as a source of varnish for 18th century Italian violinmakers (and today) and as toothpaste.

It is also commonly distributed as "red rock opium" to unsuspecting would-be opium buyers, though it contains no opiates and has not been shown to have intoxicating effects.

Sandalwood Resin Sandalwood Resin  - $7
Powder & Chips
25g, 100g

Sandalwood scent is believed to transform one's desires and maintain a person's alertness while in meditation and to bring one closer with the Divine and has antiseptic properties.

Sandalwood is a fragrant wood from the genus Santalum found in Nepal, Southern India, Sri Lanka, Hawaii, South Pacific islands and Australia.

Sandalwood perfumes have a striking wood base note. Sandalwood smells are not unlike other wood scents with the exception that it has a bright and fresh edge with few natural analogues.

Nepalese sandalwood is endangered and consequently very expensive.  All sandalwood trees in Nepal are government-owned and harvesting is strictly controlled but many trees are illegally cut down and smuggled out of the country.  Sandalwood essential oil prices have risen to $1000-1500/ kg in the last 5 years. Some countries regard the sandal oil trade as ecologically harmful because it encourages the over harvesting of sandalwood trees.
Unlike most trees, sandalwood is harvested by toppling the entire santalum tree so that the stump and root can also be used.  To produce commercially valuable sandalwood with high levels of fragrance the trees should be 40 years old (80 or above is preferred).

In Hinduism, Sandalwood is often used for rituals or ceremonies and was used as a embalming paste in Lord Shiva's temples on Shivlings.  A vast majority of Hindus wear a small mark of this paste on their forehead right above the middle of the eyes supposed to keep the 'third eye' (pituitary gland) cool.

In Buddhism, sandalwood is considered to be of the Padma (lotus) group and attributed to the Bodhisattva Amitabha. Sandalwood scent is believed to transform one's desires and maintain a person's alertness while in meditation. Sandalwood is one of the more popular scents used when offering incense to Buddha.

In India some temples have been built with sandalwood and they retain their aroma for centuries.  Jewelry boxes, fans and ornate carvings continue to be made in many parts of Asia using sandalwood.

Honey Amber Resin Honey Amber Resin  - $7

Pieces
5g or 100g
Amber is the common name for fossil resin that is appreciated for its inherent and interesting mixture of colours and it is widely used for the manufacture of ornamental objects.  Although not mineralized, it is sometimes considered and used as a gemstone.

Ancient Greeks and Egyptians considered amber to be an important healing remedy against mental illness, fever, stomach problems, throat infections, rheumatism.
The Greeks called amber the "sun stone" and believed it connected them to the sun god, creating an atmosphere of renewal and alertness.

Neopagans often use the stone for healing. This stone was called Freya's tears by the ancient Norse. Most of the world's amber is in the range of 30–90 million years old. Semi-fossilized resin or sub-fossil amber is called copal.

Amber was much valued as an ornamental material in very early times. It has been found in Mycenaean tombs; it is known from lake-dwellings in Switzerland, and it occurs with Neolithic remains in Denmark, whilst in England it is found with interments of the bronze age.

A remarkably fine cup turned in amber from a bronze-age barrow at Hove is now in the Brighton Museum. Beads of amber occur with Anglo-Saxon relics in the south of England; and up to a comparatively recent period the material was valued as an amulet. It is still believed to possess a certain medicinal virtue.

The Amber Room was a collection of wall panels commissioned in 1701 for the King of Prussia, then given to Tsar Peter the Great. The room was hidden from invading Nazi forces in 1941, who upon finding it in the Cathrine Palace, disassembled it and moved it to Königsberg.  What happened to the room beyond this point is unclear, but it may have been destroyed when the Russians burned the German fortification where it was stored.  It is presumed lost.

Australian Pine Resin Australian Pine Resin  - $7

Resin
25g

Pine resin has a mild citrus-like, green, balsamic fragrance.  It is a symbol of strength and used for cleansing.

Pine resin has a mild citrus-like, green, balsamic fragrance.   It is native to Australia and islands of the Pacific.  The plants do especially well in wind-swept locations, and are widely planted as wind-breaks, although usually not in agricultural situations.

The tree's root nodules are known to fix nitrogen and is prized for its ability to increase the soil's fertility. Its abundant leaf-fall is high in nitrogen and valued for mulch.

The gum exuded from some casuarinas is edible and was a food source for Aboriginal people.

Native Americans used pine in their incense mixtures and chewed it to treat throat infections. They also used the resin to heal wounds and bruises.  Pine is believed to be strengthening and cleansing and has long been held sacred in many cultures.

In the ancient book, Natural Science, Hildegard von Bingen wrote of pine: "The pine tree is more warm than cold and contains energies and powers. The tree is a symbol for strength."

The wood of this tree is used for shingles, fencing, and is said to make excellent, hot burning, firewood.
